Why are my drains gurgling?

Quick answer
Gurgling means air is being pulled through the water in your drain traps. If one drain gurgles, it's usually a partial clog in that drain. If several gurgle together, or the toilet gurgles when the sink drains, suspect a blocked vent pipe or a partial main line clog; both are worth fixing before they become a backup.
One drain gurgling
A partial clog makes water drain unevenly and pull air through the trap. Clear it like any slow drain: stopper, trap, then plunge or air pressure.
Several drains gurgling
- Blocked vent: the vent pipe on your roof lets air into the system. Leaves, nests or ice can block it. That's a job for a plumber or a careful roofer.
- Main line partly clogged: water backs up enough to pull air from other fixtures. Watch for the other main-line warning signs.

Is a gurgling toilet dangerous?
Not immediately, but a toilet that gurgles when other fixtures drain is an early warning of a main line or vent problem. Don't ignore it.
